N° II — Five languages, five registers

The House speaks
five languages.

I.

French

— Académie française —

Canonical subject-verb-object syntax. Rigorous agreement. Dialectical construction of sensitive clauses. Legifrance citations integral within French quotation marks.

II.

English

— Oxford University Press —

Strict British spelling (organise, colour, centre, defence). Oxford comma obligatory. Modals shall/should/may. Backshift rule.

III.

Korean

— hapsho-che (합쇼체) —

Verbal level -mnida obligatory. Rigorous nopimmal honorifics. Eun/neun versus i/ga particles distinct. Sino-Korean hanjaeo vocabulary.

IV.

Japanese

— keigo (敬語) —

Three registers: teineigo, sonkeigo, kenjōgo. Prefixes o-/go-. Particles wa/ga. Kango vocabulary. Epistolary pairs haikei/keigu.

V.

Chinese

— shumianyu (书面语) —

Pronoun nín obligatory. Adjectives guì gōngsī / bì gōngsī. Shumianyu and wényán vocabulary. Jiǎntǐ / fántǐ distinction.

Before any document leaves the House signed.
